Doctors in Beijing discovered five lost contact lenses lodged behind a patient’s eye during a procedure to treat facial atrophy

Source: The Independent

In a surprising medical case, doctors in China discovered five contact lenses lodged behind a woman's eye. The woman was unaware of the lenses and sought medical attention for facial asymmetry caused by hemifacial atrophy, a condition that created space for the lenses to migrate unnoticed. Initially, doctors suggested a fat injection to address the asymmetry, but during the procedure, they found the contact lenses.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

The Patient:
A 33-year-old woman sought medical help in China for facial asymmetry.

The Condition:
She had hemifacial atrophy, which caused a sunken appearance in her left eye.

The Discovery:
Doctors, while preparing for a fat injection to plump up the eye, found five contact lenses lodged behind the eyelid.

The Reason:
The hemifacial atrophy created space for the lenses to migrate and accumulate without causing noticeable symptoms.

The Outcome:
The lenses were removed, and the woman was likely treated for any resulting irritation.

This case highlights how contact lenses can sometimes become dislodged and migrate under the eyelid or conjunctiva without causing immediate discomfort or vision problems. It also emphasizes the importance of regular eye exams and proper contact lens hygiene.

Mr Macann, who saw the humour in the situation, said his search for help was unsuccessful, but thankfully his dogs Bella and Vinnie came to the rescue by somehow standing on the button again.

He said he was "too embarrassed" to tell his customer that evening why he was running late.

"I just said I got caught in traffic," he said.

Mr Macann said his dogs often travelled in the car with a harness, but he would now be "extra vigilant" that they were strapped in.

He also pledged to carry a second set of keys.

The RAC said Rule 57 of the Highway Code states dogs should be suitably restrained while in a vehicle so they do not distract the driver or cause injury to themselves or others in the event of an accident.

While there is no specific law about how a dog should travel, the breakdown company advises drivers to use a proper harness or dog seat belt to secure animals and prevent them from moving around a vehicle.

Unsettling “zombie” spiders—typically cave-dwellers—were spotted roaming a historic Irish castle ruin

Source: Irish Times

A newly discovered fungus, named Gibellula attenboroughii, is causing zombie-like behavior in cave spiders in Ireland. The fungus infects spiders, causing them to leave their webs and climb into exposed areas where they eventually die, allowing the fungus to release its spores. This phenomenon was initially observed at Castle Espie in Northern Ireland.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:

The Fungus:
Gibellula attenboroughii is a newly identified species of fungus that specifically targets cave spiders.

Infection and Behavior Change:
The fungus infects the spiders, causing them to exhibit "zombie-like" behavior. This includes leaving their sheltered webs and climbing to exposed locations like cave walls or ceilings.

Dispersal:
By moving to these exposed areas, the infected spiders facilitate the dispersal of the fungus's spores, which are released into the air.

Discovery:
The fungus was initially discovered in 2021 at Castle Espie, during the filming of a BBC Winterwatch episode.

Location:
The fungus and infected spiders have been found in various Irish caves, including those in Down, Fermanagh, Cavan, Leitrim, and Sligo.

Harmless to Humans:
The good news is that this particular fungus is only known to affect spiders and is not harmful to humans.

Police in Munich are investigating hundreds of graves tagged with mysterious QR‑codes across local cemeteries

Source: DW News

In Munich, Germany, over 1,000 graves were mysteriously tagged with QR codes, leading to a police investigation. The stickers, found on both old and new graves, contained information about the deceased and their grave location, but nothing else. Police are investigating the incident, with initial theories ranging from a viral marketing stunt to vandalism.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:

The Incident:
Over 1,000 QR code stickers appeared on gravestones and wooden crosses at the Waldfriedhof, Sendlinger Friedhof, and Friedhof Solln cemeteries in Munich.

The QR Codes:
The 5x3.5 centimeter (1.95x1.2 inch) stickers, when scanned, revealed the name of the deceased and the grave's location within the cemetery.

Initial Reactions:
Police investigated the incident, and the public speculated about the motive behind the tagging, with some suggesting it was a marketing campaign.

Investigation:
Police initially found no pattern to the placement of the stickers and asked for witnesses who might have seen someone placing the stickers to come forward.

Possible Explanations:
One explanation suggested by some social media users was that it was a viral marketing stunt, while others suspected vandalism or a statement by a tech-savvy artist, according to NDTV.

Company Explanation:
A company admitted to placing the stickers after the police investigation, stating they were used for internal maintenance tracking purposes.

Maintenance Tracking:
The company, a large one, used the stickers to keep track of which grave markers needed maintenance and which had been serviced, according to a senior manager.

Cost of Removal:
Removing the stickers without damaging the gravestones could cost between 100 and 500 euros per sticker, according to a senior manager told The New York Times.

A man in Florida ingested stolen earrings from Tiffany to thwart police—only for his actions to show up clearly on X‑ray scans

Source: BBC News

An alleged thief in Florida swallowed stolen earrings worth more than half a million dollars moments before police took him into custody last week.

Orlando police have accused the man, 32-year-old Jaythan Gilder, of lying to Tiffany & Co. employees in a Florida store by telling them he represented "a professional athlete", which led employees to show him "several high-value pieces".

Mr Gilder then allegedly stole the earrings and ran out of the store.

When officers caught up with him later that day, they saw Mr Gilder "swallowing several objects believed to be the stolen earrings," police said.

Mr Gilder allegedly attempted to steal two pairs of earrings worth $769,500 (£597,000), as well as a diamond ring that he supposedly dropped as he fled the store.

Police later released an x-ray that appeared to show an individual's abdomen with a foreign object inside.

When asked by the BBC, Orlando Police did not say whether they had retrieved the jewellery.

Police also said Mr Gilder has stolen from Tiffany & Co before, robbing a Texas store in 2022.

There are 48 separate warrants out for his arrest in nearby Colorado, as well.

Police charged Mr Gilder with robbery with a mask and grand theft in the first degree, involving stolen goods valued at more than $100,000. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
